2017 ~ The College Football Season Week 10 ~ featuring California (PA), Central Washington, Bowdoin, and Worcester Poly

This is it, the final week.  Leave it all out on the field.  No regrets.  Onto the games!

Game 1 – California (PA) vs. Georgia

California University of Pennsylvania is a state school of about 9,000 located in California, Pennsylvania.  In case you’re wondering which came first — the town was named after the territory.

Every season, Cal U and IUP face off in the rivalry game, called The Coal Bowl.  IUP is Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  Cal U’s teams are the Vulcans.  Vulcan was the god of fire, and now lives on through Division II athletics.

Game 2 – Central Washington vs Notre Dame

Central Washington University, a public school of about 11,000, is located in the lovely Kittitas Valley town of Ellensburg.

CWU has a Wine Studies program.  Perhaps you’d like to sample some of the coursework?  This is a Bachelor of Science program, not some wine, cheese, and degrees program.  They’re professionals.

Their teams are the Wildcats, an animal well-known for its refined wine palette.

Game 3 – Iowa vs Bowdoin

Let’s just get this out of the way, it’s pronounced BOE-din.BOE-din College is an exceptional liberal arts school of about 2,000 students nestled in charming Brunswick, Maine.

They’re a member of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin Consortium, an athletic association of three schools with an intense three-way rivalry in football and rowing.  If you’ve never seen a liberal arts rowing three-way dust-up before, you’ve lived a sheltered life.

Game 4 – Worcester Poly vs Hawai’i

Worcester Poly University is a private research school of about 6,000 located in central Massachusetts.  WPI was founded by a tinware manufacturer and wire mill owner, who both died before the opening of the school, but would be proud to know the school has high earning graduates, a reflection on the quality of education.  But enough about education, this is faux football!

Their teams are the Engineers, and their mascot is Gompei the Goat.  Back in 1891, they had a goat, and its campus caretaker was a Japanese student named Gompei Kuwada — picked as the goatkeeper because he was the only one with the initials G.K.  True story.

Are you ready?  Let the games begin!
