It’s Week 9. Teams are tired, banged up, and in need of that final burst of energy needed to win in the CFS. Good luck, teams. Now, onto the games!
Game 1 – Missouri S & T vs. Georgia Tech
Missouri University of Science and Technology is a nationally renowned (primarily) engineering school located in Rolla, Missouri. The school only recently changed its name from University of Missouri-Rolla to Missouri S & T, a name which plants its flag in the ground as a badass technology school not to be trifled with.
Their teams are the Miners and Lady Miners, which I must say is an improvement on the Miner-Rollas and Lady Miner-Rollas. Well played, S & T.
Game 2 – USC vs. Kalamazoo
Kalamazoo College, also known as K, is a highly esteemed liberal arts college of about 1,400 located in southern Michigan. K is renowned for its K-Plan, which combines a rigorous liberal arts curriculum with an experiential education. A real one-two punch!
K is part of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which is the first collegiate athletic conference in the entire country! Take a second to let that soak in.
Their men’s tennis team has won the conference championship every year since, oh I don’t know, 1936! Yes, there was a war and some NCAA sanctions in there, but hey, it’s not a perfect world.
Game 3 – San Jose State vs. Rochester
The University of Rochester is a highly-respected, widely-envied, private better-than-ivy institution located in snowy Rochester, NY. I’m just going to go ahead and rattle off some of the greatness: The Eastman School of Music, The Institute of Optics, Nobel Prize winners, laser energetics, sublime a cappella, garbage plates, and a good ol’ Take Five Program.
I’ve barely scratched the surface, but alas, this is a college football write-up.
Did I mention even their cemetery is majestic, and that the school is so much better than RIT that it pains me they’re even in the same city.
(Full disclosure: I went to Rochester)
Game 4 – Redlands vs. Texas A & M
The University of Redlands is a school of about 4,500 students located in Redlands, California. Redlands has a unique Center for Spatial Studies, where they do not study outer space or space as a metaphysical concept. At least, I think they don’t.
Their teams are the Bulldogs. The school has a tradition of maintaining a live bulldog mascot. The current mascot is Thurber. Next-in-line is Adelaide, who is apprenticing with Thurber.
Let the games begin!
