Since 7 is a prime number, this is going to be a week of prime football action. So, onto the games!
Game 1 – Salve Regina vs. Purdue
Salve Regina University is a Catholic school located in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island. It was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1934, however, this mercy may not translate well to the football gridiron.
Just to give you an idea of the magnitude of wealth that used to occupy this area of Newport, I give you their student center. It’s called Wakefield, a former mansion built in 1887 for James J. Van Alen. Actually, it’s still a mansion, minus the filthy rich millionaire.
Anyway, the whole coast is full of mansions. Was I supposed to be talking about a university? Oh yes.
Game 2 – Kent State vs. Puget Sound
The University of Puget Sound is a school of about 2,500 situated comfortably in Tacoma, Washington, which is nestled happily on Puget Sound. Oh by the way, Puget Sound is straight amazing. But alas, this is a football competition!
Their football team is the Loggers, and their mascot is Grizz. Occasionally, Grizz has been known to smell fear in the opponent’s mascot, quietly maneuver behind him, and then wildly maim him in front of the other team’s fans – ultimately causing Puget Sound to forfeit the game.
Game 3 – Findlay vs. Wyoming
In northwest Ohio about 40 miles south of Lake Erie, you’ll find the University of Findlay, a private school of about 3,700.
UF is home to a renowned Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Medicine program as well as the largest Nuclear Medicine Technology Training program in the country. Imagine the good times when they all go out drinking together.
Their teams are the Oilers, and their mascot is Bessie the Med Tech Training Cow. Ok, it’s Derrick the Oiler.
Game 4 – Texas Tech vs. Pace
Pace University was founded in 1906 in New York City by Homer and Charles Pace. With a loan of $600, they held their first classes in a single rented out room of The New York Tribune Building. That $600 has now turned into a campus in Manhattan, as well as two suburban campuses in Pleasantville and White Plains.
On the Pleasantville campus, they have an Environmental Center which is home to Pace’s birds of prey, which include Oscar the owl, falcons Delta and Ophelia, Merle the hawk, and of course, Phineas the kestrel. A kestrel is a small falcon.
Let the games begin!
