2017 ~ The College Football Season Week 5 ~ featuring Oklahoma Pandhandle State, Linfield, Johnson C. Smith, & Mary

Can you believe we’re almost at mid-season?  Let’s get right into this week’s matchups.

Game 1 – Oklahoma Panhandle State vs. South Alabama

Oklahoma Panhandle State is one of those schools you’ve never heard of, but can probably figure out where it is.

Ok, let’s get right to it, shall we – they have men’s and women’s rodeo teams!  This should and shouldn’t be a surprise.  I didn’t know collegiate rodeo teams existed, but then again, this is the Panhandle.  Rodeo scholarships. Rodeo national championships.  Rodeo season tickets?

Game 2 – Linfield vs. Kansas State

Linfield is a small school of about 2,500 students located in McMinnville, Oregon, which interestingly enough, was named after McMinnville, Tennessee, the hometown of the man who traveled the Oregon Trail to settle there.  But enough of that.

Their (eventually arrived at) slogan is The Power of a Small College, and it’s brilliant.  You may not know what your major will be, but it’ll certainly pack a punch!  Onto football.  You ready for this?  Linfield has the longest streak of consecutive winning seasons in college football – 61 years.Put another way, their last losing season predated Sputnik.

Game 3 – TCU vs. Johnson C. Smith

Johnson C. Smith is a historically black university located in Charlotte, North Carolina.  In the 20s, Jane Berry Smith provided an endowment to the school in memory of her late husband, whose name is escaping me at the moment.

Their slogan is Become Yourself, Change Our World.  Just change the world, no pressure.  I kid, a graduate of JCSU can indeed change the world.  Proof.  More proof.

Game 4 – Air Force vs. Mary

No, our armed forces are not playing against a little old lady on Saturday.  This is the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota.  It’s a peaceful, private Catholic institution founded by the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery.  The teams are the Marauders.

Mary actually has satellite campuses in six states, as well as ones in Italy and Peru.  I don’t believe there are marauders at these campuses, but I could be entirely wrong about that.
Folks, if a Military vs. Monastery matchup isn’t enough to get you excited, nothing will.

Let the games begin!
