2017 ~ The College Football Season Week 3 ~ featuring Pittsburg State, Defiance, Coast Guard, & LIU Post

Week 3 is upon us.  I can already feel the tension mounting.  I’m getting out of the way already …

Game 1 – Pittsburg State vs. Penn State

Pittsburg State is a school of about 7,500 students located in Pittsburg, Kansas.  Their teams are called the Gorillas, probably because of the large gorilla population in Kansas.  The school newspaper is the Collegio, a tribute to all the Italians of Kansas.   Pittsburg State, like Penn State, goes by PSU.  So, let’s just say the pride of all Italian gorillas is on the line here.

Game 2 – New Mexico vs. Defiance

Defiance is a private, liberal arts school of about 1,000 students.  It’s located in Ohio.  Defiance, Ohio.  Since there’s 88 players on their football team and 1,000 students at Defiance, chances are no matter where you’re standing at this school, you can see a football player.  Actually, there are 16 sports teams.  So, chances are there’s a college athlete standing right behind you.

Game 3 – Bowling Green vs. Coast Guard

If you didn’t know, the Coast Guard Academy is one of our country’s five federal service academies.  Think of it as the 5th Beatle.  Their campus is located in New London, Connecticut, and has roughly 900 cadets.  Their mascot is the Bears, named after a 19th century ship called the USS Bear, which made a dramatic Arctic rescue in 1884 and continued serve its county for another 41 years, a Coast Guard record!  Ironically, bears are terrible at sea rescue.

Game 4 – LIU-Post vs. Florida

Long Island University-Post is named after Charles William Post, or C. W. Post, the breakfast cereal magnate.  It sits on the beautiful Hillwood estate of C. W.’s daughter, Marjorie, who sold it to the school in 1951.  LIU-Post is known as a suitcase school, because many of the students go home for the weekend, except the ones who stay to watch the football team, called the Pioneers.  Pioneers did not carry suitcases.

Let the games begin!
