2017 ~ The College Football Season Week 1 ~ featuring Wisconsin-Whitewater, RPI, Edinboro, and Lewis & Clark

(Note:  I like to dedicate some commentary to the lesser known schools of this competition, since, like me, you’ve probably never heard of them.)

Game 1 – Wisconsin-Whitewater vs. Kentucky

We’re going to play a game called Guess What State Each of these Teams is Located In?  University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is a school of about 12,000 students located in the southeastern part of the state.

Their mascot is Willie the Warhawk.  Willie doesn’t sound very angry to me, but then again, this is a place of learning.  They also have a coffee house named Jitters.  Do they even bother selling decaf?

Game 2 – Duke vs. RPI

Overlooking beautiful Troy, NY and the Hudson River is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a renowned science and technology school of about 7,000 students.

Their teams are the Engineers, and not because they drive trains.  They were once ranked 4th best engineering school in the world by Business Insider!  I don’t know how that translates onto the football field, but chances are all the players are math nerds.

Game 3 – Alabama vs. Edinboro

Edinboro is a school of about 6,000 located in northwest Pennsylvania just south of Lake Erie.  It’s in the small town of Edinboro, which was named after Edinburgh in Scotland.  Thankfully, someone in America had the common sense to call it Edinboro, not Edinburgh, which is also pronounced Edinboro.

Their mascot is the Fighting Scots.  Students can get a music education degree with a focus in bagpiping.  Are you getting the picture here?

Game 4 – Army vs. Lewis & Clark

Lewis and Clark is a liberal arts college of 3,500 located in quirky Portland, Oregon.  Their sports teams are called the Pioneers, or Pios.  Their mascot is Pio, a Newfoundland dog.  They have a Pio Fair.  Their shuttle bus is the Pio Express.  Actually, their teams used to be called the Pirates until it was changed in the 40s to the Pioneers, because you know, Lewis and Clark weren’t pirates.

Let the games begin!
