Down the home stretch we come! Yes, that was a racing metaphor in a football competition, but then again this isn’t real football. But this IS real intensity, real passion, and a real showdown. Let’s get to the games!
Game 1 – Southeastern Oklahoma State vs. Michigan StateIn the city of Durant, you’ll find Southeastern Oklahoma State University and its 4,000 students. Want to save lives for a living? Well, these students do. It’s Occupational Safety & Health! They save people who don’t even know they need saving. This means you can consider them a pain in the ass, right up until they save yours.
Their teams are the Savage Storm. It used to be the Savages. They also used to be the Fighting Teachers in the original days of the school. A savage is clearly an unfair depiction of an Indian, but we all had that one teacher who was on the verge of punching a student.
Game 2 – Salisbury vs. USC
Salisbury University is a state school of over 10,000 students located in Salisbury, Maryland. If you were to venture a guess, who would you say has the #1 online GIS program in the nation? It’s Salisbury. GIS is geographic information science, and it’s kinda fascinating. You really didn’t think those maps drew themselves, did you?
Their mascot is the Seagull. As we all know, gulls engage in kleptoparasitism. In other words, they steal their food. Ever walked on a boardwalk? Anyway, I’m sure their football team leads the league in takeaways.
Game 3 – Washington State vs. Wayne State (NE)
Wayne State #1 is Wayne State College, a state school located in Wayne, Nebraska. Wayne State is big on service-learning. No, not waiting tables. Not the military. It’s civic engagement. In fact, Wayne State is part of a larger group of Nebraska schools with this common purpose. It’s the Nebraska Campus Compact, of course!
Wayne State #1 teams are the Wildcats. Wild, yet civically-minded.
Game 4 – Duke vs. Wayne State (MI)
Wayne State #2 is Wayne State University, a public research school located in Detroit, Michigan, which is in Wayne County. The school was founded in 1868 and has 27,000 students! Me oh my there’s a lot of academic programs there. Perhaps dabble in Slavic Studies, try out some Taxation, and bring it home with Biomedical Physics. Wayne State!
In the 20s, the students chose their mascot as the Tartars. In the late 90s, the students changed the name to the Warriors. After all, no rugged footballer wants to be confused with cream of tartar.
Let the games begin!
