Game 1 – Mount St. Joseph vs. Oregon
Mount St. Joseph University is a Catholic, liberal arts school of 2,400 students located in Cincinnati, OH. In the biology department, they offer a beer brewing course, appropriately listed as BRW 101. No, they’re not deconstructing Michelob Ultra. They’re just winning awards. They certainly win the award for coolest biology department in Cincinnati.
The mascot of The Mount is the Lion. Not a Mountain Lion. Not a Lion Lager. Just a plain old Lion. Rwowr!
Game 2 – Maryland vs. American International
In the center of Springfield, Massachusetts, you’ll find a school named American International College. You may be asking yourself, how can it be both American and International? Well, before World War I, the school wanted to educate newcomers to the nation, and actually had students from over 40 countries! So, the school indeed was both American and International.
Their mascot is the Yellow Jacket. Unfortunately, this creature is not both yellow and a jacket.
Game 3 – Johns Hopkins vs. Mississippi State
Johns Hopkins University is a private research school of 20,000 located in Baltimore, Maryland. The school has 15,000 postgrads, leaving 5,000 undergrads to fetch their coffee. Hey, coffee’s important at America’s first research university!
When it comes to the collective renown in the fields of public health, nursing, biomedical engineering, and medicine, they’re the best. They have ties with 27 Nobel laureates. A world class conservatory. This school has more awards than undergrads.
Their mascot is the Blue Jay, and their finest team is the men’s lacrosse team. By fine, I mean Johns Hopkins version of fine. 44 national championships. Sigh.
Game 4 – Slippery Rock vs. Army
Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania is a state school of 7,600 located in a town actually called Slippery Rock, about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. The school is known as The Rock. At the Rock, you can study Professional Writing, Cytotechnology, Dance, Corporate Security, Recreational Therapy, and for the aspiring hoteliers of western Pennsylvania, Hospitality Management.
Their sports teams are also called The Rock. Their mascot is Rocky. Their students throw rocks at opposing fans. Because this is The Rock, baby! (They don’t really throw rocks.)
Let the games begin!
